Café La Buga is owned and run by students from Ak’ Tenamit, a school built nearby that engages 500 students of the Mayan culture in educational activities such as agriculture and hospitality. The students are trained at Buga Mama, and Café Tatin, a café on the Ak’ Tenamit grounds, then transferred to Buga Mama to complete their training.
All proceeds from food and gifts purchased at Buga Mama are used to support the 500 students at Ak’ Tenamit to work toward a better life through education.

This restaurant enjoys one of the best locations in town (right off the municipal dock) and the profits go to support Asociación Ak’ Tenamit, a locally-owned and operated social development organization. The restaurant staff – all students-in-training from Ak’ Tenamit’s vocational high school – graduates with a degree in sustainable tourism. Upon graduation, these empowered young people take their newly acquired skills back to the villages from which they came to 
help support their families and communities.
